Critters.org is a great site for getting works critiqued and critiquing other people’s work. People from all stages are there: beginners to published authors. I have gotten great feedback over the years, and it has taken my writing up some notches and helped me find issues with specific stories.

Odyssey critiquing service is a way to get professional feedback on either three short stories or part of a novel. I used their services once and got some great feedback that took my writing up another notch. I was able to get published soon after getting their feedback. They also have a writing workshop, but this service is good for people who can’t take off six weeks in a row.

The Emotional Craft of Fiction by Donald Maass: This book gives a lot of great techniques for evoking emotional responses in readers. More importantly, it gives exercises to let you practice those techniques with your own work.

Writing the Breakout Novel by Donald Maass: This book gives great techniques for plotting in general. Also, exercises that you can apply to your own work.
